Shopping for cute things at Christmas

With Christmas around the corner, a variety of displays greet us. A  building made of chocolates even  in this hot place... Cuddly toys of every size and shape peep out from windows waiting to jump right into your arms as if for adoption...

But the highlight of this season are the cakes. Almost everyone  is giving a treat to everyone else...  So much so that it almost feels like 'Cake-mas' since 'goodwill to all men' is out of fashion anyway. Not that any bad will is prevalent. It's just that 'I, me, my' occupies much of our thoughts.

Cribs that were found only in houses are now found in shops, drawing cries of 'how cute, did you see this? So sweet,' etc. Though which  one of us would think of delivering a child  in the unsterilised bedroom cum bathroom of the animals? Poor Mary must have had no other choice - a closure for her honour and a shelter from the biting cold.

Any different style catches the eye. Like the Madurai jasmine for example. Indian ladies generally pin a string of flowers to the hair on top and let it hang down loose like a ribbon, Only in Madurai  the ladies  wear it as a garland in their hair.

Even those who find reptiles creepy, find the bitter gourd, carved as a crocodile, 'cute'. I once found   baby crocodiles 'cute'. Of the colour of chocolates. A man rattled some paper near them and they snapped their mouths wide. Only then I realized they were alive.

Some children decide on tasting food based solely on its looks. No amount of coaxing  get them  to eat what doesn't look good. No use of our devouring platefuls or licking our lips to tell them how good it tastes.
All's fine so long as things and objects are boosted this way. Only youngsters need to beware of losing their hearts based solely on what meets the eye. In the long run what's in the mind and heart count.

Let not a thing of beauty bring bitterness forever.
